Contents of the course
1. Basics of roasting coffee
We will roast coffee together in my DIY roaster. You will learn about the different phases of the roasting process (drying phase, maillard reaction, first crack, second crack, degassing) and get hands on experience. We will also discuss the different paths into roasting at home and what gear to buy or whether to DIY.
2. Dialling in espresso
We will look into how to get the most out of espresso at home: grind setting, extraction, puck diagnosis. We will dissect the different types of espresso drinks: ristretto, lungo, americano, milk drinks (cappucino, latte macchiato, flat white). Last we will discuss gear for those interested: types of grinder (single dose vs. hopper, grind-by-weight, stepped vs- stepless, separate vs. built-in), types of espresso machines (single vs. dual boiler, boiler vs. thermoblock, group head types and sizes) across all budgets.
3. Latte art
Lastly I will teach the basics of latte art, by teaching each participants how to pour a solid heart. We will learn how to best foam the milk, how to detect if the milk is too thick or too thin and
In order not to waste milk, some of the exercises will be done with soapy water and soy sauce.
